REVIEW: "Rot" by Ommeta

Furthering the evolution and refinement of Luke Finlay’s (Primal Mastering) solo project Ommeta, Rot is the follow-up EP to last Julys release of Precostal and with it came a lot of expectations.

I started writing this late last year to put down my impressions to coincide with the EPs release - plans didn't work out that way and I'm only just now opening the laptop in the new year.

When I first discovered the EP was only 7 minutes long I was somewhat disappointed and had to check for corrupt files, but as the brooding ominous opening track gave way to the chaos of “If He Wants To Be Alone” all that disappointment shifted - from the guitar tone, the riffs, and the drum programming - everything was one step beyond Precostal.

Everything that is....expect the duration.

I found I had to put the EP on constant rotation to fully appreciate the release, more than once I found myself blinking only to end up listening to silence.

Oddly - over the last few weeks of spinning this, the fact I keep thinking I’m missing something is constantly pulling me back in and listening again, and again, and again.

Rot is catchy, brutal, technical, and never boring.

With two releases and live performances under their belt - Ommeta is certainly an act to keep an eye out as 2020 gets underway.

”Rot” may be short - but that just means to punches you right in the gut.
